Task Summary:

In this assessment, you will participate in two separate discussion forums with your classmates demonstrating your understanding of Power and the challenges and advantages of diverse types of team settings. Both discussions are aligned with the give case study, provided by the Learning Facilitator. Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.

Context:

Projects are prone to communication difficulties because of their unique nature and the temporary matrix structure through which projects are generally managed within organisations. In this environment, communication could be the most important factor determining project quality, efficiency, productivity and customer satisfaction. The ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, is the foundation of effective project leadership. By participating in discussion threads, you will practice the skill of professional communication and knowledge sharing with colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to apply Organisational Behaviour theory to practical situations by discussing the given case study and project management scenarios applicable to the theories. In addition, you will work on synthesizing lessons of the module and reflect on your own learning through discussions by applying them to current or prior professional experiences.

Task Instructions:

To participate in the discussions, complete the required module readings, including the given case study, and research prior to class. Face-to-Face students will participate in the discussions, during class, in week 2 of Modules 2 & 3. The main post of 500 words (+-10%) will be written in the discussion forum prior to class and you will then participate in the discussions in class with a minimum of 2 responses to other students. Online classes will submit their main post of 500 words (+-10%) to the discussion board. Each student will, then, write a minimum of 2 responses of 250 words (+-10%) each to other students’ posts.

Discussion 1: Shared Reflection/Discussions topic - Due end of module 2

Through reflecting on the case study presented in module 1 learning resources, describe one or more of the types of power, defined by Shenoy, which could be demonstrated positively or negatively by the leader of the team/project. Further discuss how a project manager can use this type of power to impact the performance of the project team and improve the likelihood of project success? What benefits can be gained from using more than one source of influence when leading a team? Is there a difference between influence and manipulation? Justify your answer. Respond to at least two or more colleagues' postings, offering further support or potential challenges to using the power types in a Project Management capacity.

Introduction

Leadership and management of employees is type of managerial process as well which evolves with time and leads organisation in regulated path. With reference to the article by Shenoy, understood different types of lessons and understandings attributing to two powers that project managers own that is legitimate power, reward power and expert power, referent power and coercive power (PMHUT TEAM, 2013). Reward power is  a kind of power derives from the capacity to provide benefits or compensation to another individual. Expert power is a kind of power is based on a person's superior ability or understanding in a certain area of competence in a particular field of study (PMHUT TEAM, 2013).

With reference to the case study, in R&D project management, the project manager is facing difficulty to work with the diverse and cultural team and it require project manager to make employees happy (Kerzner & Kerzner, 2013). Thus, as per the module learning, the project managers must associate rewards with motivation and employees ae driven by quality work. The rewards must be allocated in such a manner that all employees feel that they can achieve it and even when employees do not achieve the reward job satisfaction is governed. The concept of Expert power, the knowledge and skill of project managers themselves must be high so that entire team can look up to its manager. The leadership is often projected in commanding style but supportive type of leadership can only be offered if leaders possess optimised knowledge and experience to answer or justify the question of peer teammates and employees (Fischer and Charef 2021).

The merits of functioning in team are evident from examples of all types of multinational organisation that have high revenue generation, customer base and high performing staff. Team formation and its functioning in an optimised manner aids project managers and accurately in getting work done on time with good quality and accuracy. The good planning process gives clarity to employees and rationalise work in just one step for the organisation (Agarwal et al. 2021). As per the case study of Quasar Communications, with expansion of business, Project manager will face challenging. In managing a project over international boundaries are attributes like managing different cultures and communication. The language barrier and different types of perception in the employees before can be different from the vision of project manager. As project manager, it is recommended to understand employee’s perception so the good communication channels can be fabricated governing quality work inputs from international teams as well (Liphadzi et al, 2017). 

Organisational behaviour and its concepts fundamentally are used by project managers so that different types of leadership styles and motivational models can carter the human behaviour in an effective manner. The aim of project manager is to incline the vision employees with vision of organisation (Lee, 2021). 

Conclusion

The above discussion concludes that different types of leadership styles, good communication and team management all are attributes that a project manager must carter. It could be evaluated that types of experiences and knowledge governed by a project manager will carter my effectiveness as a project manager.
